A new book  has just been published by one of the foremost authorities on body language in business, Carol Kinsey Goman, Ph.D.

Carol conducted an extensive survey to research her new book, The Truth About Lies in the Workplace (Berrett-Koehler).

Here are a few of the startling facts she uncovered:

67% of workers don’t trust senior leadership

  53% said their immediate supervisor regularly

  51% believe their co-workers regularly lied
• 
  53% admitted lying themselves

Listening and Learning from The Master of Listening

What a wonderful treat I had and I have Linked in to thank! I was able to reconnect with a man who I call "The King of Listening". Dr. Manny Steil who I met in 1985 when he was the guest speaker at my National Sales meeting  for Standard Rate and Data.  I still remember the words of wisdom that I learned from Dr. Steil and he clearly has been one of the major influencers in my career.

We had a great opportunity to catch up on the phone- and Manny said in a follow up email- 'It was great to Listen and catch up'-- he is truly someone I could listen to and learn from for hours. He is the founder of The International Listening Leadership Institute and Communications Development, Inc.

I look forward to continuing our conversation and listening and learning.

Dr.Steil is someone you want to have at your next sales meeting-- He literally wrote THE book on Listening and Leadership!

The True Power of the Handwritten Note

 

 

 

 

I was visiting my terrific dentist, Dr. Allan Miller today _www.thatsmydentist.com  and was reading all the notes he receives from happy patients-me included. You can see him standing in front of the bulletin board and it is overflowing with notes. The one I loved more than anything is the one to the left from 8 year old, soon to be 9- Philip!

How wonderful to receive these lovely thoughts of gratitude for what Dr. Miller specializes in 'Creating Beautiful Smiles' and Healthy teeth.

As I was riding back on the train, I saw this wonderful article in today's New York Post  about a letter that was received 70 years after it was mailed!! A terrific story -take a quick glance at the article on the link below.

What stood out for me was this line from the young woman who now lives in the apartment where the letter's intended lived many years before:

“Nobody writes handwritten letters anymore."

 

It is true a handwritten note stands out and makes a difference. I like to call it your 46 cent investment- since that is the price of a stamp today.

Take a few minutes today or tomorrow and make someone's day by sending a heartfelt note. It makes a difference and hopefully it won't take 70 years for it to be delivered.

 Once you choose a quality company, trust them.  You are no longer the expert: the guide is,so treat him as such.Study your itinerary before you and ask questions then. The job of the guide is to deliver the itinerary not explain why it is organized as
it is.

 Read guidebooks from The US and other countries to get a
balanced view of where you are going: The Rough Guides are British, Lonely
Planet Australian etc.

 If a discussion moves into overseas politics, let the locals
do the talking; it is your time to learn, not to teach or manage.

 Before leaving, put an ‘I am away’ signature on your email and
phone message with  a 24 hour window for
answering.

 Answer emails only once a day and leave your phone locked up
in the hotel room. Turn off any audible alert signals.

 On vacation, everyone is equal, do not assume you speak for
the group and do not use phrases like: We
think….

 If you speak other languages, do not use them in front of
others who do not understand. Do use them to help others or keep quiet about
your skills.

Relax about others’ punctuality or excessive questions. You
are not there to evaluate but to have fun and loosen up a bit.

 Finally no one flunks vacation and you are not the tester or
boss.

Staying In Touch Across The Continents

Staying In Touch

 In December of 2005, I visited the wonderful country of
Kenya. Truly life changing in so many ways as anyone who visits there will tell
you. When we visited one of the tribes, I had the honor of
talking with the Chief of the Village, William as he gave us a tour. He was
inspiring and a fantastic spokesperson for his community.

 Seeing how these wonderful people live and their
passion and unity for each other made me and everyone in my group so very
appreciative of what we have. 

 Remember there is no electricity anywhere and I tried to
experience what everyday life is like as I entered one of the huts.

 You can imagine my surprise when Chief William gave me his business
card and asked for mine- and said he would email me! Yes-- he runs daily into
the next village- a mere 20 mile run each way to buy beads for the ladies to create
their beautiful wares ( see our picture) and to do his Emailing!

 He asked me to send him one of my books and he also admired
a watch I was wearing which was my Oprah watch from Chico's that I travel with.I promised to send him one.

 When I returned home, he did in fact send me an email that
was waiting in my inbox and to remind to send the book and the watch :-) and then three weeks later, he sent me a thank you note and said that the book was proudly
displayed in the Main hut. I was honored. He was also showing off the watch!

 Years have passed and just today, I received an email from
him with a note about a new project they are doing and wanted to know if I
remember him!!

I just wrote back and said, William, how could I ever forget
you!You are the master and you live what true relationship building
is all about.

Here is what I learned from Chief William about Sales and Communication:

*Be proactive- He emailed me to see that I returned home
safely and thanked me for visiting his village

*Be resourceful- He runs back and forth 40 miles daily to
use a computer and email ( no wonder they always win the Marathon)

*Ask for what you want- He wanted to make sure that I
sent the book and the watch- and he asked for both

*Say Thank you-- He wrote me a thank you as soon as he
received the gifts

*Stay in Touch- Yes, it has been quite a few years,however, he reached out again to tell me about a new project they are embarking on and I will be sure to contribute

*Differentiate yourself- When William wrote to me, he assumed that I would remember him and with all the thousands of people who pass through his village over the years, he must have a great memory system- since he knew I was the one that sent him a book and a watch-- or at least he made me feel special

Chief William truly made an impression on me!!
